Hyperbaric Treatment Center: Student Affairs Director, former HTC Medical Director, retires
He has shepherded your sons and daughters through the curriculum, counseled them in financial or personal matters, and helped arrange their post-graduate training as physicians.
“I really like working with medical students, it’s a fun thing,” he has said. “If I can keep them out of trouble and help them do good things in the future and be successful, I’ll feel like I’ve done something.”
You have done something quite vital, Dr. Smerz. With both passion and compassion, you have helped transform the lives of a generation of physicians. We are as grateful to you as we will miss you, and that is a lot.
We also want to note Dr. Smerz’ exemplary duty during 25 years in the military, a career that included serving as the senior medical authority for all U.S. special operating forces. He also served as the medical director of the UH Hyperbaric Treatment Center from 2000 to 2010. And, best wishes to Dr. Smerz’ wife, Angela Smerz, who retired after serving as a hospital chaplain at Kap’iolani Medical Center for Women and Children and The Queen’s Medical Center.
