The University of Hawai‘i Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health (OB-GYN) donated $100,000 to Kapi‘olani  Medical Center for Women & Children, in conjunction with the University of Hawai‘i (UH) medical school’s faculty practice, University Health Partners of Hawaiʻi.

This gift was recognized at a check presentation on Monday, June 5, with the naming of three sleep rooms reserved for OB-GYN residents and physicians who need rest during long shifts, especially those working late nights and early mornings. The donation will be directed to support Women’s Services at Kapi‘olani.

“This is a very meaningful donation for our medical center and the many OB-GYN physicians and residents who are committed to the care at Kapi‘olani,” said Martha Smith, CEO of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. “We are honored to be a teaching facility for UH JABSOM. The partnership we have with UH is reflected in the amazing work these doctors provide to the women who receive our services. This donation is an investment in the medical center, our doctors and our patients as well as their families.”

The facility also serves as a “teaching hospital” for JABSOM students and residents, who are supervised by faculty physicians. Dr. Ivica Zalud, Professor and Chair of the Department of the UH Department of OB-GYN, emphasizes the great impact that Kapi‘olani has on the future caretakers of Hawai‘i.

“Our John A. Burns School of Medicine faculty are grateful and proud of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children,” said Dr. Ivica Zalud, Professor and Chair of the UH Department of OB-GYN. “This is where we and our residents feel at home. This is the place where we advance women’s health and groom the next generations of physicians to care and advocate for women. This is the place where we push ourselves in pursuit of discovery. With this donation made through our faculty practice, University Health Partners, we hope to make overnight stay while on call at Kapi‘olani a bit easier for faculty, residents and fellows.”

The rooms will be acknowledged as part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) as the JABSOM OB/GYN Faculty Call Room, JABSOM OB/GYN Resident Call Room and JABSOM Resident/Fellow Call Room. Residents will be working with Kapi‘olani to make sure the callrooms accommodate their needs.
