Shapiro named new CEO of University Health Partners of Hawaii

July 7, 2017 — Dr. Larry J. Shapiro, dean emeritus of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will join University Health Partners of Hawaii (UHP) as its Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2017.

UHP Board Chair Jerris R. Hedges, M.D., welcomes Dr. Shapiro, a renowned administrator, pediatrician and genetics researcher, to this key executive role.

“We are delighted that Dr. Shapiro will be joining us as our new CEO,” said Dr. Hedges, who is also the Dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine. “With deep family ties to Hawaii, Dr. Shapiro and his wife Carol have strong feelings of aloha for our island ʻohana.  As a nationally recognized figure in academic and clinical medicine, he is well versed in health policy and the challenges of health care transformation. I am confident that he will play an important role in strengthening health care delivery and provider training in Hawaii, and his substantial national and international leadership experience will help continue the growth of UHP, the faculty practice plan for the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.”

For 12 years, Dr. Shapiro served as dean and executive vice chancellor for medical affairs at Washington University School of Medicine, one of the top U.S. medical schools. After stepping down in 2015, Dr. Shapiro continued to serve on the medical school faculty.

An alumnus of Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Shapiro completed a residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital before embarking on his medical career. After a stint at the NIH, he moved to the University of California, Los Angeles where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and later to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). At UCSF, he was a professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and chief of pediatrics at the UCSF Children’s Hospital, which he helped to establish.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Shapiro has been the vice chair of the Council of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also has served as president of several medical organizations, including the American Society of Human Genetics and the American Pediatric Society.

“I am delighted to be joining UHP to assist in achieving the mission of enhancing health and healthcare in Hawaii through the provision of high quality, patient-centered care, and by facilitating the educational and research activities at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine,” said Dr. Shapiro. “Hawaii has unique cultural attributes, which makes it a rich and rewarding environment for being engaged in healthcare. While there are many challenges in our current circumstances, it is through partnerships with our patients, other physicians and providers, hospital systems, and with government and third-party payers that I believe Hawaii can continue to lead the way in health outcomes with our own special approach that respects all aspects of our diverse community. I am eager to work with the talented physicians, nurses and other professionals at UHP.”
