We are dedicated to supporting the clinical, educational, research and community service activities of the University of Hawai‘i health sciences.

University Health Partners of Hawaii (UHP Hawaii) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization affiliated with the University of Hawai‘i that was founded in 1993, under the name University Healthcare Associates (UHCA). From 2002 to 2014, UHP Hawaii was previously known as UCERA (University Clinical, Education and Research Associates). In 2015, UCERA made the change to UHP Hawaii to better focus on partnerships with local hospitals and community organizations.
University Health Partners of Hawaii serves a major role in supporting the clinical departments of the John A. Burns School of Medicine and the University of Hawaiʻi health sciences.













1965
1965: The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa develops a medical school named after then-Governor, John Burns, who strongly believed in medical education in Hawaiʻi. The medical school, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), becomes a two-year medical school operating out of Leʻāhi Hospital in Kaimuki.
1973
JABSOM expands its medical education to four years.
1980s
JABSOM is tasked with managing a clinical learning environment within a hospital-based setting to enable doctors to teach residents and stay current within their fields.
1993
JABSOM creates University Health Care Associates (UHCA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, to manage its faculty practice with five initial practice locations on Oahu.
2002
UHCA changes its name to University Clinical, Education and Research Associates (UCERA) to better reflect its mission as the supporting faculty practice of JABSOM.
2008
Dr. Jerris R. Hedges, Vice Dean emeritus of Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine, joins JABSOM as its Dean.
2014
UCERA is renamed University Health Partners of Hawaii to further hone its focus on local partnerships.
2014
UHP became the practice partner for the UH-Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene to facilitate their partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education in providing school based health services.
2017
Dr. Larry J. Shapiro, Dean emeritus of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, joins UHP as its Chief Executive Officer.
2018
UHP providers now serve in more than 100 locations throughout the islands.
2021
UHP & The Queen’s Health System join, forming the Queen’s University Medical Group – a new physician group – as part of an academic affiliation
2021
UHP & Hawaii Pacific Health form an academic affiliation
2022
Derek Wong joins UHP as its interim Chief Executive Officer.
