Hawai\u2019i (UH) medical school\u2019s plan to bring new HIV diagnoses to zero statewide as \u201cbold\u201d and \u201ccutting-edge\u201d.<\/p><\/div><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2016\/07\/19\/gwu-researchers-receive-28-million-grant-find-hivaids-cure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Douglas Nixon<\/a>, of George Washington University, is Principal Investigator of the newly-funded, $28 million HIV Cure program grant \u201cBELIEVE\u201d (Bench to Bed Enhanced Lymphocyte Infusions to Engineer Viral Eradication) supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He was in Hawai\u2019i to speak at the \u201cWorld AIDS Day\u201d conference sponsored by the UH Center for AIDS. The conference followed the kickoff in 2015 of the Center\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii2zero.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHawai\u02bbi 2 Zero\u201d<\/a>\u00a0iniative.<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cI was super impressed by the \u2018H-2-0\u2019 program,\u201d Dr. Nixon told\u00a0<em>UH Med Now<\/em>. \u201cI think it\u2019s ambitious, it\u2019s bold, it could really set the scene for the rest of the country and I find it fantastic that people here in Hawai\u2019i are taking this initiative.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Nixon said the UH Center for AIDS World AIDS Day program, which featured updates from national and local HIV experts, showed that prevention is vital.<\/p><div id=\"attachment_50284\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"300\" width=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50284 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/31236550592_186afe44ce_z-1-200x300.jpg?fit=300%2C300\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/31236550592_186afe44ce_z-1-200x300.jpg 200x, http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/31236550592_186afe44ce_z-1-356x534.jpg 356x, http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\/srv\/htdocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/31236550592_186afe44ce_z-1.jpg 427x\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Douglas Nixon heads a $28 M grant to help cure HIV infections.<\/p><\/div><p>\u201cPart of the whole cure program is to actually stop more people from getting infected in the first place and then we want to be able to improve antiretroviral therapies, we want to get more people onto therapy, we want to make sure it\u2019s working, make sure they\u2019re affordable,\u201d Nixon explained.<\/p><p>He continued, \u201cI think there\u2019s progress in a lot of different areas and incrementally they will add up to bigger achievements. She is Deputy Director for Clinical Service at the<br \/>Seattle &amp; King County HIV\/STD Program and Co-Director of the UW Public Health Capacity Building Center.<\/p><p>Dr. Dombrowski\u2019s research focuses on the delivery of HIV and STD clinical services and population-based approaches to improving the HIV care continuum. She is the Medical Director of the Public Health \u2013 Seattle &amp; King County STD Clinic and oversees the King County HIV Care and ART Promotion Program, a project to improve engagement in HIV care and antiretroviral use in King County. She conducts capacity-building assistance with health departments throughout the U.S. to improve HIV prevention and care activities.<\/p><p>\u201cI was very fortunate to be invited and to be here today,\u201d said Dombrowski. \u201cThe HIV care continuum is a concept of making sure that we find everybody who\u2019s infected with HIV to get people diagnosed into care, stay in care, and access the treatment they need and that\u2019s a key part of making sure that people with HIV live longer and that we can prevent new infections.\u201d<\/p><p>Dr. Dombrowski conducts capacity-building assistance with health departments throughout the U.S. to improve HIV prevention and care activities.<\/p><p>Over the past five years, approximately 80-100 newly diagnosed cases of HIV have been reported annually in Hawai\u02bbi. That\u2019s a number the University of Hawai\u02bbi Center for AIDS wants to see fall to zero. The center, part of the medical school, embraced that cause last year, launching the \u201cHawai\u02bbi to Zero\u201d campaign.<\/p><p><strong>CONFERENCE PHOTOS BY AMANDA SHELL: Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uhmed\/albums\/72157675987721160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0to view.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Conference highlights<\/strong><br \/>Led by Peter Whiticar and Tim McCormick of the Hawai\u2019i State Department of Health Harm Reduction Services Branch, and Heather Lusk, Director of the CHOW (Community Health Outreach Work) to Prevent AIDS Project, Dr. Dombrowski and the University of Hawai\u2019i researchers joined community stake holders from O\u2019ahu and the neighbor islands in discussions on how best to lower these statistics.<\/p><p>UH research that is planned to help with prevention include \u201ctreatment as prevention\u201d efforts to step-up wrap-around services and assist re-linking to care for vulnerable HIV-infected patients was described by Dr. Jack Barile, Department of Psychology, UH M\u0101noa College of Social Sciences.<\/p><p>Dr. Frank Wong, Department of Tropical Medicine, JABSOM), outlined efforts to maximize use of PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV negative patients at risk for HIV).<\/p><p>In the HIV cure arena, Dr. Douglas Nixon from George Washington University updated the community on new developments in HIV cure research.
