Our doctors are faculty staff of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, teaching future physicians.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Our doctors don\u2019t just care for patients. Patients might encounter these students in every phase of their medical care. Upon graduation, these new doctors will have several more years of internship and residency training to complete before they will be practicing independently.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>At this point, the new doctor enters the first year of post-medical school training known as intern year.\u00a0<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #037956;\">Interns<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>(sometimes referred to as <strong>first-year residents<\/strong>) are doctors, but they may only practice medicine with guidance and supervision. They traditionally wear short white coats to signify their status as interns.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>At completion of the internship year, interns enter residency. At this point, they&#8217;ve earned their M.D. degrees and may practice independently as general practitioners. In addition, they typically have their own practice in their specialty. There are also\u00a0<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #037956;\">consulting physicians<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0who may see you and provide consultation to the attending physicians.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>So why would you want to see a resident for your medical care or have an intern or student participate in your treatment?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We understand that some people might be skeptical about being treated by a newly trained doctor. However, there are benefits to seeing a resident for medical care\u2014benefits for the individual patient as well as for our community. \u00a0Typically, residents have more time to spend with their patients.\u00a0 remember that when you&#8217;re in the care of a resident physician, you still benefit from the experience of the attending (supervising) physician.\u00a0\u00a0Our faculty physicians instruct residents in the latest innovations, technology, and approaches to medicine.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we mean when we say that UHP provides you with\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #037956;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hivizhawaii.clickfunnels.com\/doctors_who_teach_doctors40414706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomorrow\u2019s Healthcare Today<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>And how does the community benefit from this arrangement?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Our patients contribute to the <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #037956;\">health of Hawaii<\/span><\/strong> by participating in the education and development of physicians in our community.
