class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>May 24, 2019 &#8212;<\/strong> In late May, UHP Chief Executive Officer Dr. Larry Shapiro and his wife Carol received a special honor from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where Dr. Shapiro served as Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine from 2003 through 2015. This occasion installed Dr. Helen McNeill as the first holder of the Larry J. Shapiro and Carol-Ann Uetake-Shapiro Professorship that was established to honor the Shapiros for their many contributions to the success of Washington University.<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4119 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/uhphawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HMcNeill-e1558741840329-228x300.jpg?resize=228%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/uhphawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HMcNeill-e1558741840329.jpg?resize=228%2C300&amp;ssl=1 228w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/uhphawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HMcNeill-e1558741840329.jpg?resize=114%2C150&amp;ssl=1 114w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/uhphawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/HMcNeill-e1558741840329.jpg?w=393&amp;ssl=1 393w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dr. Helen McNeill, professor of Developmental Biology at Washington University and the inaugural Larry J. Shapiro and Carol-Ann Uetake-Shapiro Professor\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shapiro has been lauded for his leadership in research and medical education, as well as<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for his efforts to build bridges between the Medical and General campuses of the University, and particularly for playing a key role in the establishment of the Institute for Public Health. He substantially enhanced the school\u2019s relationship with BJC HealthCare; and advocated for diversity and gender equality at the medical school. He expanded the Washington University Physicians clinical practice and led BioMed 21, which seeks to rapidly translate research findings into therapies for patients. During all of Dr. Shapiro\u2019s tenure as executive vice chancellor and dean, the medical school was a top-10 medical school in US News and World Report rankings and was fourth among all medical schools in National Institutes of Health funding. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol-Ann Uetake-Shapiro, who grew up in Honolulu and earned a degree in zoology from the University of Hawai\u2019i, is a life member of the Washington University Women\u2019s Society, a member of the Woman\u2019s Club, a staunch supporter of the Washington University \u201cHome Plate Program,\u201d and a dedicated ambassador for the School of Medicine. She has served as a trustee of The Nature Conservancy in Missouri. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shapiro is a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was vice chair of the Council of the National Academy of Medicine. He also served as president of the American Society of Human Genetics and the American Pediatric Society, and was the former chair of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers. In 2017, Dr. Shapiro became chief executive officer of University Health Partners of Hawaii.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since stepping down from his position as Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean the University has bestowed a number of other recognitions. He was presented with the Search Award of the Eliot Society in 2016. In 2018, the Directorship of the Institute for Public Health was endowed by BJC Healthcare and named in Shapiro\u2019s honor as well as the establishment of a scholarship in the School of Medicine to encourage diversity.
