class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>January 27, 2016 &#8212; Faculty of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/obgyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women\u2019s Health<\/a>\u00a0(OB-GYN) at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) are involved in nearly a third of the births in Hawai\u2018i each year. Many of these physicians practice medicine through the University Health Partners of Hawai\u02bbi (UHP), JABSOM\u2019s faculty practice plan.<\/p><p>The JABSOM UHP faculty made history Dec. 21, 2015, when they announced the largest philanthropic investment in JABSOM to date by faculty at their holiday celebration.<\/p><p>Using its professional service collections, the team donated $500,000 to create an endowment. Today, the UH Board of Regents approved the Endowed Professorship in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women\u2019s Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.<\/p><blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cThe OB-GYN faculty decided to make a gift with their earnings, and the UHP Board voted unanimously to support this endowment,\u201d said\u00a0Chip Ellis, University Health Partners Chief Financial Officer.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Faculty members of the JABSOM Department of OB-GYN gather with UHP Hawai\u02bbi CFO Chip Ellis, JABSOM Dean Jerris Hedges, members of the UH Foundation and the Kapi\u2018olani Medical Center chief of staff to celebrate the announcement of an endowed professorship within the Department of OB-GYN.<\/p><p>Ellis continued, \u201cThe creation of the Department of OB-GYN Professorship is an ideal collaboration between the department and the faculty practice plan. We know that this endowment will have great outcomes. It will help the department attract, support and retain talented faculty who will give back to Hawai\u2018i immeasurably. The endowment will also provide critical resources for faculty development and enhance the research, education, and community outreach missions of the department.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cThis is a very important gift for us,\u201d said JABSOM Dean Jerris Hedges. \u00a0\u201cIt is a powerful demonstration of how deeply the OB-GYN faculty believe in and support their department. They know that by investing in themselves, they can do more to serve Hawai\u2018i\u2019s families. A gift of this magnitude will help ensure the future success of the department.\u201d<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cKapi\u2018olani Medical Center for Women &amp; Children is proud of our partnership with the faculty of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, which enables us to provide the specialized maternity care that our hospital is recognized for,\u201d said Kapi\u2018olani CEO Martha Smith. \u201cThis endowment demonstrates their commitment to the health of Hawai\u2018i\u2019s women and children, and we are very grateful for their continued support and collaboration in providing quality patient care.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>This gift comes on the heels of two other major philanthropic investments from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/gift-impact\/remembering-loving-encouraging-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Santosh Sharma<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/gift-impact\/investing-healthy-women-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kosasa family<\/a>.<\/p><p>\u201cThese gifts signal a growing recognition that private support is critical to ensuring long-term departmental success.
