The faculty practice plan for health care providers on staff at the University of Hawai`i has won a 2014 “When Work Works” Award for the ways it is increasing business and employee success!

UCERA–University Clinical Educational and Research Associates–is one of only four local workplaces winning the award in Hawai`i this year. According to judges, they did it by demonstrating a commitment to providing a variety of flexible work options and being dedicated to open, transparent, two-way communication (that is, encouraging employees to put forth creative ideas and feedback on ways to improve business, including work-life balance options as well.)

Howard Lee, UHA; Mercedes Lanza, UCERA HR Director; Harry Byerly, Hawai’i Human Resources; and Timothy Wilke, Afloat Training Group.

The award is a source of pride for UCERA because two-thirds of the winning formula is based on an employee survey. UCERA has become a great place to work!

Worksites must first qualify in the top 20% of the country based on a nationally representative sample of employers. Two-thirds of the evaluation of applicants comes from an employee survey. Applicants are evaluated on six research-based ingredients of an effective workplace: opportunities for learning; a culture of trust; work-life fit; supervisor support for work success; autonomy; and satisfaction with benefits and opportunities for advancement — all factors associated with employee health, well-being, and engagement.

“When Work Works”, is a national research-based initiative that highlights how effective and flexible workplaces can yield positive business results and help employees succeed at work and at home. When Work Works is a joint partnership between the Families and Work Institute (FWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The other companies winning locally this year were Afloat Training of the Pacific, HiHR (Hawai’i HR), and UHA (University Health Alliance).

What UCERA Does

UCERA facilitates the delivery of outstanding clinical care and creates capacity to train the future health care workforce for Hawai`i by providing the staff, expertise and organizational infrastructure necessary to support the clinical activities of our university doctors, advanced practice nurses, and psychologists. Clinical research conducted in our training sites is constantly improving our ability to diagnose and treat health issues that most commonly impact the population of Hawai`i and the Pacific.

JABSOM clinical teaching and research programs span the breadth of medicine and include both primary and specialty care. UCERA supports the clinical departments and of the UH health sciences including family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, geriatrics, hyperbaric medicine, speech therapy, psychiatry, psychology, and Native Hawaiian Health.

Congratulations, UCERA!
